Chapter 2
'I really don't get it,' Evy says with an annoyed look on her face, 'the toilet broke this afternoon and she expects me to fix it all by myself. She has all the money in the world but cannot afford a better toilet?'
I slowly shake my head in disbelief. 'I'm so sorry, love. I would have fixed it as soon as I got home from work.'
'You really have no idea how many times a lady has to use the toilet once she is pregnant.' Evy smiles, as if my ignorence is amusing to her, which it probably is.

'I'll make it up to you.' I take her hands and kiss them gently. 'You're so beautiful, do you know that?'
'Stop it. Have you seen this belly?' Ever since Evy got pregnant she hasn't stopped complaining about her body. She thinks she's fat, I think she's gorgeous. It's an ongoing battle that I have been losing for months. The woman of my dreams is carrying my future son or daughter. There's nothing more amazing than that.

I follow her upstairs, to my bedroom. It hasn't been redecorated in years since I'm still waiting for my mom to... well... die.
'How was work?' Evy asks as she covers herself under the blanket.
'The usual.'
'You're still not promoted?'
I shake my head. 'It takes time. I just have to prove that I can be trusted.'
Evy sighs, just like my mom does whenever she sees me. The truth is that we're counting on my mom's inheritance because, without it, we couldn't afford the house.

In fact, Evy thought it was the only reason I wanted children in the first place. My mom wouldn't give me a single penny, we all know that. But she wouldn't let her grandchild suffer, right? No one would be that heartless, not even my mom. I don't see my mothers money as an easy way out. It's just a present to make up for all the things she never did for me when I was a child.
The next morning we wake up in a house that feels chilly.
'Bet it's even warmer outside than in here,' Evy mocks. 'We should get a fireplace.' There's a lot of things that we should and a lot that we can't, but I don't say that out loud.
'Take a hot shower and get into bed. You should be resting anyway.' I kiss my girlfriend lovingly on her hair.

'And then what?' Evy asks. 'I love you, Johnny, but I need to do something. You don't want me to work. Your mother doesn't want me to even look at her computer and there's no tv in your room.'
I hate to see my girlfriend unhappy. It feels like I'm failing her.
'Babe, I promise everything will be alright. Soon, we'll have lot's of kids and you'll be busier than ever. That was our dream, remember?'

'It is... I guess my hormones are just acting up. I'm sorry.' Evy sighs and pauses a moment before giving me a smile. I kiss her once more before heading into the shower. Maybe they'll promote me at work today and I can buy her something really pretty. Something that will cheer her up. She deserves it.
She deserves the world.
